Chapter 1: I feel chapter one was done well but was rushed a bit, because in the first 3-5 pages one of the Watchmen is already dead. There are flashbacks about The Comedian, but he is never really well explained. The death of the Comedian was important, because that sets the tone for the next few chapters, but as I said it was rushed. Rorschach is a very well written character, because he was so mysterious and you wanted to keep reading more because of him. Even though there is no prequel, the back story for most of the characters are fantastic and is explained very well and thoroughly. The back story usually takes place in the endings of chapters. All in all chapter one was well written.
Chapter 2: This chapter really explains The Comedians demonic ways after he tried to rape Laurie's mom. This being said you really don't feel any sympathy for him, and in some ways feel as if he deserved it.We also get Introduced to Hooded Justice who I feel was a really great character because of the way he is shown in this chapter. We see another flashback of The Comedian killing a pregnant women who belonged to him, and this shows what type of character The Comedian was. At that point you could tell The Comedian was crazy and had no sympathy for him. By the end of the chapter I felt as if he deserved his death.
Chapter 3: This chapter was very confusing, because there is a comic inside a comic. We see that Laurie and Dr. Manhattan's relationship isn't going well which is going to set up Dr. Manhattan's back story. The Comic in this chapter was needed because it explains Dr. Manhattan in some ways, I feel they could've done this in another way which would make it easier to understand.

Chapter 4: This chapter starts off with Dr. Manhattan on Mars looking at a picture of his human self with his other girlfriend named Janey Slater, and knowing he's going to drop the picture soon. I find this very intriguing because he knows what's going to happen in future chapters. He also reminisces about his life, which I find brilliant because it tells us his backstory and how he got his powers. It also explains his relationship with Laurie, and how much Laurie meant to him. This chapter was a very boring chapter, because of its lack of action and is more of a informational chapter.
Chapter 5: The lack of action is in the last chapter is made up in this chapter, and just by the first few panels and the artwork and designs you can feel the tension. It starts off with Moloch coming into his house and opening a fridge and Rorschach interrogating him. At this point Rorschach doesn't suprise me by his actions and how far he will take something, This is freighting in some ways because he leaves himself too open for failure and is easily predictable. They go into the comic in a the comic thing again which as I said a do not like at all, but appreciate not because of the creativity but the viewpoints it has to offer. A few panels later Daniel invites Laurie to stay over at his house and you can clearly tell Daniel likes her but she doesn't get the hints. As I said there is a lot of action in this chapter, and Veidt almost gets shot but is agile enough to ricochet the bullet with a vase. The person who tries to shoot Veidt kills himself by biting a poison capsule. This brings the question of who's trying to kill these people. Rorschach also gets framed for killing Moloch and the Police capture him. This shows Rorschach's biggest weakness : Predictability.
Chapter 6: This chapter calms down a bit, with Rorschach getting interrogated and lying to questions. I realized that Rorschach isn't the same person he was with the mask on, and is a very inward person who doesn't talk unless he's talked to. During the investigation while Rorschach is lying and we truly see whats going on, it tells his backstory, another amazing move made by the author. Unlike The Comedian you can sympathize with Rorschach and understand why he is the way he is because of his childhood. We also see that Rorschach will kill people who he thinks are scum, like the person who kidnapped a child.

Chapter 7: This chapter is one of the more romantic chapter in the novel. There is a lot of dramatic irony in this chapter because we know they are going to make love. This chapter is also the beginning of the Watchmen going back to doing their "Superhero," things. We also get to see Nite Owl, and not Daniel which is refreshing. Nite Owl is sort of like Rorschach in some ways, they both act differently when they are wearing there costumes. In Nit Owls case, he becomes more outspoken and looks confident, I now understand why they were partners.
Chapter 8: The chapter starts off really slow but turns out to be a really important chapter, and picks up almost halfway through. We see Rorschach in jail, and the three men who come to talk to him. I automatically thought in it was them who did all this but realized they were in jail and were just enemies of Rorschach. This shows how much work Rorschach has put in to keep the city clean. We also see how many enemies Rorschach has created because of this and what a dangerous situation he's in. Nite Owl understands, and knows he cannot solve the mystery by himself and need Rorschach's help. This also permanently puts Rorschach as one of the most important if not the important character of the whole book. We also see the death of the first Nite Owl which really didn't have any heavy impacts in the book in my opinion.
Chapter 9: The chapter is a very weird in a lot of ways, first one being Laurie talking to Jon on Mars and second one being you started to sympathize for The Comedian. First we see Dr.Manhattan really does not care about the human life, and we it is now we realize that he was/is a important character. We also realize he only cares about certain people, and for the most part is selfish and does things the way he want to. When they are talking Laurie gets into her backstory which is done marvelously, because it all makes sense while telling the story. Through Laurie's backstory we see a softer side to The Comedian which makes me feel bad for him. I realized reading chapter nine that anyone from a teenager to an elder can pick up this book and read it and really enjoy. This might be one of the most versatile books I've ever read.

Chapter 10: This chapter is the most important chapter because we find out who's behind the murder. I think it would've been a good idea to reveal the antagonist in chapter 8 or maybe 7 because I feel his part is rushed and is not explained as well as it should've been. I really like how Rorschach and Nite Owl are working with each other and it brings a good atmosphere in the book. In this chapter there is a really big hint to who's the antagonist where they are putting their stock in different companies. At first I was really confused as to why they were doing this but it makes sense now. The setting where the they confront the antagonist is perfect because it's has a very symbolic meaning.
Chapter 11: We see another side of Veidt in this chapter, he's more hostile and acts/looks like more of a maniac. We see what kind of incredible speed he has and how Nite Owl and Rorschach are outmatched by his speed and intelligence. All the parts with the newsstand is a useless part and just takes up space in my opinion.
Chapter 12: The last chapter was a let down for me because the ending just left a bad taste in my mouth. In my opinion they should've just ended the book with Veidt and Dr.Manhattan. I really liked the addition of the huge monster making Dr.Manhattan not be able to see the future.I didn't like the fact that Rorschach died, even though it makes him a symbolic part of the book. I feel like there would have been more of an impact if Dr.Manhattan died just because of all the powers he has. If Veidt was the smartest man in the world he should've killed Dr.Manhattan.

ReplyDeleteIs chapter 4 to you one of the most confusing? I found it hard to understand without a second re-read.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I really needed to take my time reading that chapter because of the type of person Dr.Manhattan is. He himself is a very confusing character which comes out in the chapter.
