Journal Entry #1
Chapter 1The pictures are dark and bloody. There’s a feeling of suspenceas the detective searchs The nite owls apartment. The comic pictures seem to resemble some old spy comics from my parents generation. One of the major characters is already dead before the story even gets going. The reader can only suspect that there will be a lot of jumping back and forth in time. Present day to past and vice versa. The closing quote is odd that superheroes need to get information from others .should’nt they already know what’s going on?
Chapter 2
More dark pictures. The reader learns that the comedian was ruthless , a jerk and a murderer. There are more flashbacks as the plot jumps from his funeral (present day) to the past. This story so far is extremely negative. I don’t fully understand the closing quote but I think the author is using it as a metaphor toasting to the comedians. Is this whole thing a big joke???
Chapter 3
Again everything is just so dark and these characters have a lot of problems going on in their lives. I guess the author is making a comparisons that superheroes have rotten luck as much as the everyday person does. Sometimes I wish I could teleport myself or other people like Dr Manhattan does. I could ran away from my fears or whatever is bothering or annoying me. The reader can relate also to troubled relationships, because, bottom line, we all have them. Example Laurie and Dr Manhattan’s. Laurie does what most people do, go vent to a friend. There are more comparisons to real life experiences and these costumed superheroes. The closing quote from the bible book of Genesis is not exactly clear but probably meant to make the reader think about life in general. One can only assume that a higher faith or higher power should fix all our problems . We live in a world filled with hate and war and prejudice and people are left to their own thoughts and ways to improve their lives be it negative or positive
Journal # 2
So far, after reading chapters four, five and six of The Watchmen, written by author Alan Moore, I can honestly say, it is kind of all over the place, and seems really messed up. I don’t really understand it , but Dr Manhattan had it rough and Rorschach , what a weird name, had it even worse. No wonder he started to murder people. In this story, so far, it seems like everyone has a problem. Even Dr Long a secondary character is a workaholic that has marriage problems. Personally I’m not really into this book because it is to graphic for me, and I’m getting through this as best as I can. I find that it does not explain things very well, and I would like to just get it over with so that I don’t have to read it anymore. I don’t really understand why everyone has to be so violent and sometimes, lack better judgement. Its just an overall really negative book. Example, if Rorschach was getting beaten up at home , why didn’t he just go to the police. If Jon wanted that other girl, why didn’t he just break up with the one that’s getting old. In chapter five, I tried reading it, but it was flashbacks galore, and really hard to follow the plot to understand what was going on. This book is just people beating up other people up, and in my opinion, it sucks. To many flashbacks, leaves the reader wondering are they in the past or the future having to reread, which is annoying. The pictures are very dark with a lot of blood. Example: Rorschach childhood was very hard and sad. The author shows that fiction portrays reality with being beaten and bullied and having a single parent. Even when she was murdered he didn’t care. I really have no desire to keep reading, however, I have no choice in the matter. I sincerely hope the story gets better and maybe something good will happen to all these characters of this book. It seems like the author is portraying how life can be hard at times for most people, but so far, I don’t see much positivity in what I have read.
Journal # 3
Chapter 7
This chapter is mostly about Dan (Nite Owl) and Laurie (silk Spectre) It shows them becoming closer romantically. There's a lot of one sided flirting from Laurie. The author makes a comparison to reality in showing that Dan's father, being wealthy, could afford to send his son to Harvard where he did a double major. There are more comparison to everyday life example that of the name of Dan's airship to an owl in a Disney movie.
They also talk about smoking and how hard it is to quit. He ask Laurie about her feelings towards Jon and she expresses them. They both express feelings of loneliness. More comparison to everyday life. Example watching the news, wars that are going on in the world, etc...There are pictures of Dan daydreaming.
These two characters break the Keene act become superheroes and safe people from a burning building, now they are firefighters ha ha ha!!! The chapter ends with them having sex and Dan stating that they should break Rorschach out of jail.
Chapter 8
This chapter starts out with friends catching up but mainly it is about breaking out of jail, people getting killed. The reader learns that it is almost Halloween. It's all over the place. Seems like a conspiracy is happening having costumed masked men and trick or treaters which makes it confusing. Then the pictures are dark again. With thugs and cops. And the chapter ends with death.
Chapter 9
This chapter starts off with the need to get away and they do. They teleport to Mars. How cool! The author shows how people can get travel sickness. Ha! Ha! Not by car but by teleporting.
This chapter goes back and forth with memories of a young girl's past, meaning Laurie. The author shows the reader again that not all people have a perfect childhood like in the story books and movies but brings the reader to understand how hard growing up can be with no guidance. She learns through Jon that the Comedian was her father??????? The reader is left wondering as the characters are pondering the meaning of life. Is it a joke or a miracle.
